What is a Will?

A Will is a legal document that sets out how you want your assets to be distributed after you pass away. It lets you name the people or organisations who should receive your property, savings, investments, and personal belongings.

A Will also lets you appoint an executor — someone you trust to carry out your wishes. If you have young children, you can name a guardian to look after them.

In Singapore, a valid Will must be in writing, signed by you, and witnessed by two people who are present at the same time. You must be at least 21 years old and of sound mind when you sign. Wills in Singapore are governed by the Wills Act.

Without a will, Singapore’s Intestate Succession Act, with its fixed rules, will determine how your estate is distributed. These rules may not reflect your wishes.

Who needs a Will?

Most adults in Singapore benefit from having a Will. Here are common situations where it matters most:

Married with Children

Name a guardian and decide how assets are split between your spouse and children.

Property Owners

Clarify who inherits your property, especially if held as tenants-in-common.

Business Owners

Set clear instructions for business shares and succession.

Singles

Direct assets to family, friends, or charities instead of default rules.

What you need to prepare?

Before meeting a lawyer, gather the key details below. Being prepared makes the appointment faster and can save you money.
